Celebrating Our 5th Anniversary
It looks like my blog is primarily going to be a commemoration of major events, allowing family and friends to have convenient access to my pictures. I don’t think I’m bound for daily or even weekly entries, but you never know.
Harry & I recently celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary and took advantage of the milestone to engage in multiple festivities throughout the month! We topped off the events with a vacation to San Juan island. We decided to transport and entertain ourselves by biking, leaving our car at the outbound ferry dock. During our several day stay, we snuck in three long rides and a day of kayaking. View more of our pictures at:

No pictures of them due to a surprise appearance and far distance, but much to my intense delight, we saw an orca pod from our home-bound ferry! They were breathtakingly beautiful, even though we could only see their dorsal fins and faint traces of white patterns on their bodies. This experience was particularly satisfying due to the hours of time we spent patiently waiting to see them from the Lime Kiln State Park shores (see lighthouse pics) and to our high hopes of seeing them while kayaking, both to no avail. It was nice not to pay for a whale-watching boat expedition to a get “guaranteed” sighting, both to avoid adding to the whale’s stress and possible harm, as well as to maintain the surprise element (and save $$$!). Other animal sightings included porpoises, seals, bald eagles & eaglet, foxes, and a camel. Yes, a camel. We heard about Mona, the single-humped dromedary, from our local kayak guide. She lives on a local farm along our last biking route, so we greeted her as she was laying down in a pasture and she sweetly looked up to the call of her name (well, it also could have been to see the truck that blazed by soon after us!).
Well, enough with the animals! More and more, I’m beginning to act and sound like my mom when it comes to wildlife (”Oh, look at the [tenth we've seen in the last hour] elk, honey!”). Just like her, I’m almost always the first to spot an animal, I think because she vehemontly trained us to have our eyes “peeled” (which always made me think of peeled grapes, scaring me a bit as a little girl) during our countless trips to national parks.
We had a wonderful vacation to act as a great marker of five phenomenal years. I’m looking forward to the next five—maybe kids, a dog, more travels—what else will change?
